- Speech Communication I - 2 hours
A fundamental approach to the philosophy, procedures and problems
of oral interaction among human beings. Thus, this course will include
the study of speeches given by others, the writing of speeches and
the delivering of the speech.
215 - Speech Communication II - 2 hours
A treatment of the basic principles of both organization
of material and its delivery. The objective is to give the student
the techniques and the poise necessary to communicate his thoughts
to the group. Clarity and simplicity sought in student speeches.
Prerequisite: Speech I.
233 - Fundamentals of Broadcasting - 2 hours
To develop an appreciation and sensitivity for the
strengths and weaknesses of radio, the course introduces the process
of communication and decision making and examination of various
communication channels. The majority of time is spent on the reproduction,
control, and recording of sound as fundamental to the student's
actual production of a radio program in the ABC turntables, microphones,
and control (audio) boards.
310 - Creative Writing - 3 hours
Creative writing gives students the opportunity to
develop individual style following the principles of effective rhetoric
using various types of paragraphs, the short story, the essay, the
theme, and the thesis.
333 - Audience Psychology - 3 hours
This course is designed to give the student an introduction
to communication theory, spiritual decision process, the function
of mass media in society and the Church in Africa. Video and Tape
cassettes will be utilized.
334 - Advanced Radio Production - 3 hours
An examination of the philosophy of mass media usage
in Christian witness, with supervised involvement in radio production.
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Broadcasting.
335 - Writing for Radio - 3 hours
Principles of radio writing and re-writing are studied
and practiced with writing projects in the areas of: continuity,
promotional announcements, public service announcements, sports,
radio talks, news, and teaching programs.
343 - Audio Receptivity - 2 hours
As communication scholars spotlight interpersonal
communication the role of receiver as an equal partner becomes clearer.
Most research and time, however, is spent teaching speaking and
disregarding the role of the listener. This despite the fact that
research consistently demonstrates that most people spend more time
listening than the other three verbal communications. This course
through exercises, self analysis, lectures and tests will seek to
correct this imbalance.
348 - Media Writing Workshop - 2 hours
In this course students are helped to become more
effective in their abilities in writing for the media, specifically
in the medium of newspaper. Covers what is news? And what are its
values. The different types of news stories. What is news style
and how it differs from other types of writing styles? The different
news leads (simple, complex leads) and when to use them. How to
polish up the lead and why it is so important to have a good lead
to the story. Writing the complete story, specifically the body
of the story. Again the course covers editing and proof-reading
skills.
432 - Broadcasting Strategy - 2 hours
This course designed for advanced students in Radio
Broadcasting. The principles of Broadcasting management and the
related fields of program planning, promotion, finance, follow-up
and feedback will be studied. These will be opportunities for live
Christian broadcasting over RADIO ABC-FM. The strategy for Christian
broadcasting will be examined from various perspectives as well
as the evaluation of the philosophy and goals of the Christian broadcaster.
433 - Radio Announcing - 2 hours
This course is designed to develop basic desirable
qualities of a general-purpose radio announcer. Subjects covered
include reading ability and rate, vocabulary, articulation, interpretation,
marking copies, etc.
440 - Journalism/Yearbook - 2 hours
In this selective elective students will participate
in creating the college annual by utilizing their skills in creative
writing and by learning how to write articles as reporting journalist.
The class will also teach the fundamentals of good photography,
layout design, editorial journalism and publishing.
